International Compost Week
Composting has many environmental benefits, so this week we are raising awareness on why we all should be composting our organics and using compost.
Composting is the process of turning kitchen and yard waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer. About 30% of our waste is compostable, so instead of throwing away food and yard waste into the garbage, let’s give it back to the earth!
Why compost?
- Waste Reduction: 30% of household waste is compostable
- Eliminates need for chemical fertilizers, restores minerals and nutrients
- Retains moisture, reducing need to water
- Helps break up heavy clay soils
- Protects watersheds by reducing runoff – compost is highly permeable
- Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions
To celebrate, Lac La Biche County has several programs and services:
- Community Garden – There are now raised beds available with composting on site! Secure your plot now by completing an application.
- Companion Planting Workshop at 6pm on May 24, 2022 at the Community Garden in Alexander Hamilton Park. To learn more or to register, email green@laclabichecounty.com
- CORE Workshop on June 7, 2022 from 6 to 7pm in McArthur Room. Learn the basics of backyard composting with our free Community Organics Recycling Enhancement (CORE) program. Participants will receive all the tools they need to get started for free including a tumbling composter and kitchen caddy. Space is limited so email green@laclabichecounty.com to register
