Lac La Biche County offers animal control services through a contracted service provider. These services are governed by the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw.
Learning about the County’s animal control services and bylaw will help you understand the important responsibilities of pet ownership. If you do not own a pet but live near residents who do, being familiar with these services can help you report stray dogs and bylaw violations.
The County’s Peace Officers routinely deal with dogs that are wandering at large. When a Peace Officer locates a dog, the animal is transported to a facility where it is housed and provided with care. How do I claim my dog after it has been picked up?
Dogs are lodged for a maximum of three days, to allow time for owners to claim them. If a dog is not claimed, the animal is surrendered to the service provider and may be made available for adoption.
There is a cost for having dogs released to their owners. In accordance with the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw, fees are incurred for every day that a dog is held in the holding facility. Peace Officers may also impose fines in accordance with the bylaw.
Dog Licenses & Microchipping
All dog owners in Lac La Biche County must register their pets if the dogs are more than six months old. Registering your dog makes it easier for Peace Officers to reunite lost animals with their owners. Dog licenses are a one-time purchase. A regular license for a non-spayed or neutered dog costs $50, and a license for a spayed or neutered animal costs $25. Owners can buy licenses at McArthur Place (10307 100 St) or the Bold Center (8702 91 Avenue, Lac La Biche).
When purchasing a license, you will need to provide:
- Your name, street address and telephone number
- The name, sex and description of your dog
- Proof of your dog’s current rabies vaccination and other immunizations
- Proof of your dog’s spaying or neutering
After registering, you will receive a tag. This tag, to be fastened on your dog’s collar, will identify your pet if it becomes lost.
Microchipping
Peace Officers scan every dog that is located for a microchip. If one is found, they will contact the chip provider to obtain the owner’s information. If your pet is microchipped, remember to update the provider with your most current address and contact information.
Off-Leash Area
Alexander Hamilton Park, at the eastern edge of the hamlet of Lac La Biche on Lakeland Drive, has been designated as an off-leash area for dogs. Dog owners are reminded that they must be in control of their pets at all times.
