Environment Week takes place from May 30 - June 5

There's lots of activities scheduled for Environment Week, as follows:

  • Healthy Waters Lac La Biche and Lac La Biche County are inviting everyone to take part in a lakeshore cleanup challenge. Between now and May 30, take a photo of your lakeshore cleanup and tag Healthy Waters Lac La Biche Facebook page or email it to to be entered into a draw for a $100 cash prize and a swag bag! Bags and gloves are available for free if you need them. If you’d like more information on the lakeshore cleanup, please email Winners will be announced on the first day of Environment Week – Sunday, May 30th!
  • May 31 - 
    • Starts at 6 pm on Zoom - Mad About Science is teaming up with FCSS and Jr. Family Night on Monday, May 31st, starting at 6pm on Zoom. Learn about the environment through fun games, experiments and other activities!Registration is required, so please call 780-520-9868 or email to register.
    • 7 pm on Zoom May 31.- Solar or Not to Solar. Presentation by Al Bertschi with Portage College on Zoom – We are all looking to reduce our monthly expenses but does solar make "cents" this far north?Al Bertschi will share his experience and his power bill to help you decide. Zoom Link:
  • June 1 - 
    • Reuse Centres are now open at Lac La Biche County Landfills and Transfer Stations.Each of the County's landfills and transfer stations has a Reuse Centre, where you can drop off and pick up gently used items, free of charge. Furniture, tools, exercise equipment, toys and more are accepted. For safety reasons, however, items like clothing and bedding are prohibited. Please call (780) 623-6739 for details.Covid restrictions include:
      • Separate Drop-off Area: Please use table outside to drop-off your items.
      • One Customer at a Time: Capacity will be limited to one person in the center at any given time. 
      • Look only, no touching unless you take it home!
      • Items not accepted: Clothing, cloth furniture, car seats, food items. This is due to limitations on sanitization practices and general safety concerns.
    • Winners of the Environmental Stewardship Awards to be announced.
    • 6 pm: CORE Workshop on Zoom. Learn the basics of backyard composting with our free Community Organics Recycling Enhancement (CORE) program. Participants will receive all the tools they need to get started for free. Space is limited so email to register.
  •  June 2 -
    • Please join Healthy Waters Lac La Biche on Wednesday June 2 at 6 pm on Zoom for a public open house. Jay White from Aquality and Janine Higgins with Alberta Environment & Parks will be providing participants with education on keeping our watersheds healthy for generations to come.     • 6 pm: Waste and Recycling Workshop on Zoom at 6pm.
      • Learn about the following:

        • Composting

        • Where does it all go?
        • Curbside pickup
        • Transfer stations
        • Landfills
        • Compost
        • Hazardous Waste

    • Join us on Zoom:
  • June 5 -
    • 10 am to 2 pm – Household Hazardous Waste Roundup & Shredding Event at County Center. Dispose of hazardous items like paint and aerosols for free from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and safely shred confidential documents for recycling. All households that bring items for disposal will receive a free gift.

  • Send us a video telling us why you love Lac La Biche Lake and what you’re going to do to help keep it healthy and clean
  • The winner of each category will receive a $250 cash prize
  • Ages 18 +
  • Show us proof that you attended at least 2 of these events, and you’ll be entered in a draw to receive a $250 cash prize.
