Voyageurs hockey team to remain in Lac La Biche County
County and Portage College to enter into sponsorship agreement
The Portage College Voyageurs will stay on familiar ice at the Bold Center and Lac La Biche County will be the hockey team’s main sponsor for the next three seasons.
As originally proposed by the college, the County will provide the team with $100,000 in funding each year for three years. The minor hockey rate will also be applied to the team’s use of the Bold Center ice rink, and the cost of placing the Voyageurs’ logo at centre-ice will be waived.
The college approached the County with an offer to support the Voyageurs in this manner earlier this year. The County accepted the most time-sensitive requests in February, followed by the offer to enter into a sponsorship agreement later in the spring. This week, the college and the County came to an agreement to formalize the three-year funding to sustain the team in the local community.
“I am pleased that Portage College and Lac La Biche County Council were able to come to an agreement quickly on the issue related to the proposed move of the Portage College Voyageurs to Cold Lake,” said Randy Benson, Chair of Portage College’s Board of Governors. “I trust that Portage College and the community of Lac La Biche will mutually support one another as we move forward with the ever-present challenges of post-secondary education in our region. Finally, my very best to the Voyageurs in the upcoming season.”
“We are pleased to see the Voyageurs staying at the Bold Center, which has been the team’s home base for years,” said Mayor Omer Moghrabi. “The Voyageurs are a source of community pride, and the team’s presence in our community generates a wide variety of economic benefits. That is why Council and I wanted to keep the team here, and we look forward to three more years of local Voyageurs hockey action.”
Even with the addition of the newly announced Junior B hockey team, the County is confident the Voyageurs and other teams can be accommodated at the Bold Center.
