County chooses to sponsor Portage College Voyageurs
Council accepts college's proposal for funding men's hockey team
As proposed by Portage College, Lac La Biche County is prepared to be the Portage College Voyageurs’ main sponsor for the next three seasons, keeping the hockey team on familiar ice at the Bold Center.
County Council passed a motion today to enter into a three-year sponsorship agreement for the team, with $100,000 in funding to be disbursed each year. Portage College had approached the County earlier in 2017, advising that the team was facing a funding shortfall.
The college’s proposal was not accepted at the time. Upon further review, and receiving feedback from residents and other stakeholders, Council has changed its position.
“I reviewed the college’s proposal and asked Council to reconsider sponsorship. I received Council’s support for a three-year agreement,” said Mayor Omer Moghrabi. “The college is crucial to Lac La Biche County, as is the hockey team. There’s not only an economic impact; there’s a sense of community pride as well.”
The college’s proposal also included cost reductions for ice rental and centre-ice logo placement. These requests have all been accepted by Council.
The County will liaise with Portage College to finalize the terms of the agreement. The County looks forward to seeing Voyageurs home games continuing to take place at the Bold Center multiplex.
